Curator Eric Ladouceur invited us to take a stand by staking a claim to a region of the globe. This choosing of territory from Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion map thus became emblematic and crystallized the issues and stakes that matter to each one of us. Having often used water in earlier works, it became important to me that this was not a continent, but rather a floating mass of ice that fluctuates with the seasons and, more recently, with human activity. The fluid shape of the Arctic Ocean ice cap, our nascent awareness of the possibility of its disappearance, the financial stakes involved and ice memory and the preserving cold are all aspects that I find compelling.
